The Thunder take the Sting out of the Hornets
Round 1 of the preliminary playdowns for the Midgets is over, the Thunder finished off the Howick Hornets in 3 games straight Sunday afternoon in Howick. The Zurich offense came out strong and it didn't take long for them to score the first goal of the day, off some great passing by Captain Nick LaPorte, defenseman Kris Ducharme jumped into the play up the middle to make it 1-0 early on. With Josh Groot defending Zurich's net with confidence he gave the Zurich offence the freedom to focus on scoring in the other end. Congratulations to Brett LaPorte for gettng his first goal for the season and assisting the third goal also by sending a pass out from the corner to his cousin Nick to finish the 1st with a 3 goal lead.
As they continued into the second the Thunder gained momentum and Colin Gingerich scored the 4 th goal for Zurich by tipping in a point shot from Ducharme. Followed up by a later unassisted goal by Braden Erb, so after 30 mins. and going into the second intermission Zurich continued to dominant the score board with a 5 -0 lead. However Howick was not ready to hand over the win without a fight and came out fast in the third to score their first of the game in the first few minutes. The rest of the third was fairly uneventful other than a few penalties and Howick doing their best to chip away at the Zurich lead by getting a couple more goals to bring them within 2, but Zurich's Captain decided to end the game off with another goal of his own to finish the Hornets off 6 - 3. Round 2 has the Thunder heading south to Bothwell, Game 1 Wed. night Feb 2nd @8:30pm in Zurich, Game 2 Thurs.night Feb.3rd @8:30pm in Bothwell and Game 3 back her in Zurich Sunday Feb.6th @ 4:40pm.
