A group of young men from Zurich and area returned the same Ken Waters Memorial Trophy to the village that was won 56 years ago, the organizations very first OMHA title. This was Zurich’s 7th OMHA Championship and a special one after being moved up to ‘D’ caliber this season, it was the first ever Ontario win for the 1999 born players and ‘back to back’ titles for the second year players born in 1998. With the Bluewater Community Centre in Zurich almost filled to capacity Saturday afternoon the Creemore Valley Hawks came into town and spoiled what could have been the first ever OMHA title celebration on home ice. The Valley Hawks opened the scoring early on an unfortunate deflection to silence the home crowd. Zurich battled back to knot the score at one part way through the first on a goal from Mitch Finlay assisted by John Cooke. The Zurich Thunder Bantam Rep Club battled back in a hard fought affair to clip the Creemore Valley Hawks 2-1 in game 2 of the OMHA 'D' finals. The Zurich boys came out flat in the first period in Creemore and the home team took it to them scoring on the power play half way through the first period to take a 1-0 lead before Mitch Finlay buried one late in the first on a pass from Travis Cressman to knot the score. The Zurich Thunder Bantam Rep team shocked the visiting Creemore Valley Hawks with a tight checking 4-0 victory in Game 1 of the OMHA 'D' Finals. It was the Valley Hawks first defeat of the season (other than SilverStick) and after allowing only 12 goals against all season (according to the OMHA website) it was a huge accomplishment for the hometown Thunder.
