Thunder Stun Valley Hawks 4-0 in Game 1
The Zurich Thunder Bantam Rep team shocked the visiting Creemore Valley Hawks with a tight checking 4-0 victory in Game 1 of the OMHA 'D' Finals. It was the Valley Hawks first defeat of the season (other than SilverStick) and after allowing only 12 goals against all season (according to the OMHA website) it was a huge accomplishment for the hometown Thunder. Connor Brand opened up the scoring early for the locals with a breakaway goal on a pass from Tyler Merner. The score remained 1-0 until the last minute of play in the second period when Mitch Finlay made a nice pass to Travis Cressman who scored a pretty breakaway goal to put the locals up 2-0 after two. Finlay put the Thunder up 3-0 half way through the third on a pass form John Cooke and a minute later Cressman scored his second of the game with a nice move on a pass from Devon Steckle. Capitalizing on defensive mistakes was the difference in this one for the Thunder. Will Overholt made some key saves throughout the game to pick up the shutout in between the pipes. The team continued their diciplined play throughout the game. The series heads to Creemore tomorrow afternoon for game two. A better effort is expected from the Valley Hawks at home on their smaller ice surface. There is still 8 seats ($20/seat) remaining on the coach bus to Creemore tomorrow if anyone else is interested in joining the team. The bus leaves the Bluewater Community Centre in Zurich at 12:00 noon.
