INNISFIL FUN FEST CHAMPS!
Last weekend the Zurich Thunder Atoms had three days full of amazing hockey in Innisfil! Hard work and dedication was shown from every teammate which led them to bringing home the championship!!
The tournament started off Friday night facing the tough Innisfil Winterhawks #3. Although Zurich dominated most of the game, Innisfil had a strong goaltender that held their team in, leading them to a 3-1 win.
Zurich Thunder turned things around on Saturday, winning both of their games. A 7-0 win facing the Port Colborne Sailors, followed by a 4-2 win against the Otonabee Wolves.
That 4-2 win against Otonabee put Zurich in a tie for the semi-finals wildcard spot with the Coldwater Wildcats. Thunder managed to claim the wildcard spot by winning the goal percentage tiebreaker - by one goal!
In the semi-finals the atoms were matched up against the North Middlesex Jr. Stars. Having faced North Middlesex in our own tournament earlier this season and defeating them, the Jr. Stars were looking for a revenge win and came out strong. However, the Thunder players weren't ready to go home quite yet and came out even stronger - winning the semis 3-2.
Zurich Thunder did it - fought their way back from a tough loss Friday night to claim their spot in the championship finals! Who did they end up facing in those finals? None other than Innisfil Winterhawks #3! Our kids were ready for the rematch - they weren't going to let Innisfil get the best of them again! It was a grueling, evenly matched (and intense) game that was tied for most of the game. Scoring our second goal part way through the third period, Zurich needed to either quick score another goal or hold off the Winterhawks for a few more minutes. With a combination of amazing teamwork and outstanding goal tending, the Zurich Thunder Atoms won the championship 2-1!
All of the coaches and parents are incredibly proud of the entire team and what they accomplished this past weekend! WAY TO GO THUNDER!!
