HISTORY IN THE MAKING...
Well...there we have it folks! Zurich / BCH Peewee Girls maiden hockey game against Tillsonburg Lightning, and what a game it was...
BOOM...twenty-two seconds into the first period an explosive shot by No. 10 Rachel Tsitomeneas put the puck in the back of the net, assisted by No. 27 Julienne Geoffrey and No. 12 Aerin Martin. The first shot, first goal and first assists registered in the history books by a fresh new team. Surprise, shock or just plain excitement it does not matter for the first period a score of 1 - 0 held for the next 9 ½ minutes.
HORN SOUNDS...INTERMISSION...FLOODING...PERIOD 2
Boom-Swish-Zing, three quick goals by the Tillsonburg Lightning and one more in the third before a scramble at the front of the net, whistle blows and the referee signals "GOAL" number 2 scored by No. 19 Hannah Crane, assisted by No. 20 Zoey Regier and No. 14 Logan Brand, again excitement floods the stands.
Although the final score of 7 - 2 for the visiting team does not tell the true story of a well played positional game, first goals and first assists; we are proud that a small town girls hockey team got a chance to show the beginning stages of something great. No sadness was felt in the dressing room after the loss, just smiles, excitement and anticipation for next week when they get to play 2 games and maybe, just maybe, pull their skills together and put a 1 in the win column, if not, oh well, they will have fun trying.
As for Peter Overholt and D’Arcy Martin, I know for a fact that all the girls and their parents thank you for all your time and efforts spent in bring this team to the ice. Numerous headaches and stumbling blocks did not stop you in your tracks, it just made you turn the corner and pursue other options.
The girls and parents would like to express our sincere thanks to BCH Ice Dogs Minor Hockey Association for their helping hand in making this girls hockey team a reality.
Finally, to the coaching staff...Dan McCarter, Deb Tsitomeneas and Shannon Crane, thank you for your time and skills you bring to this new team.
